Acne, also known in the medical world as acne vulgaris, is a skin condition with the appearance of blackheads (comedones), pimples, pimples and/or subcutaneous inflammation. Often located on the face, chest, back, neck and/or shoulders in places with many sebaceous glands.

The function of a sebaceous gland is to keep the skin supple and protect your skin against bacteria.

Almost 85% of people have to deal with acne at some point.

What can cause acne?
Increased sebum production due to hormones. The drainage ducts of the sebaceous gland follicles are clogged. This is because skin flakes do not flake off at all or do not flake off properly and start to clump together. The sebum can no longer escape and accumulates, causing blackheads (white comedo).

In addition, the sebaceous glands contain bacteria, including the bacterium: Propionibacterium acnes (p.acnes). This bacterium causes the wall of the drainage duct to become damaged, causing the drainage duct to eventually burst. The sebum ends up in and on the surrounding skin, causing inflammation, resulting in redness and pimples.

But damage to the skin due to incorrect care, use of cosmetics or medication can also be an important cause of the development of acne.

How do we approach acne treatment?
We believe that the skin should be well cared for, inside and out, with the help of nature’s strength and resilience. People often make a mistake in their approach to the skin and work too intensely. The result is a severely damaged biometric balance of the skin. Every skin is different and so is every treatment. We will work with you to find the cause, provide skin care tailored to your individual needs and, where necessary, supplemented with nutritional advice.

Various possible acne treatments with Eminence products are:

  • A basic treatment consists of manual cleansing, removing pimples and blackheads, salicylic acid peeling and, where necessary, followed by other peelings and finally a wonderful soothing care with the right skin care products for the skin type.
  • The Eight Greens line contains phytoestrogens that balance the skin’s hormone levels. Minimizes signs of hormonal aging and hormonal acne breakouts and lightens pigmentation.
  • The Eight Greens line contains phytoestrogens that balance the skin’s hormone levels. Minimizes signs of hormonal aging and hormonal acne breakouts and lightens pigmentation.
  • The Clear skin line is mildly detoxifying for acne with oily skin types. It detoxifies and reduces clogged pores without irritating the skin. Helps prevent acne and reduces inflammation, while healing probiotics exfoliate and soften skin.

For those who do not have enough time to come to the practice, there is also a home treatment program from Éminence.

This is basic acne care. The products in this line contain encapsulated salicylic acid. This ensures that the salicylic acid penetrates the skin less aggressively but is very effective.

Nutritional advice and tips
Unfortunately, there are many bad food sources for those who have problems with acne skin. The hormone insulin, for example, ensures proper regulation of blood sugar levels. When the insulin balance is disturbed, the body becomes more sensitive to (skin) infections and (skin) inflammations.

Insulin
When insulin metabolism is disturbed, this increases the risk of acne. Blood sugar fluctuations can be caused by carbohydrates (such as sugar) and dairy.

The result is often an increased insulin level. This in turn causes increased production of growth hormones in the liver. This hormone stimulates the production of sebum, which can clog pores more quickly

Omega-3 and zinc can have a supportive effect when you want to reduce acne. We know that Omega-3 helps to reduce inflammation.

Don’t want to eat fish? Other sources of Omega-3 include krill oil, walnuts, hazelnuts, chia seeds and flax seeds. The latter must be crushed immediately before adding them to the meal. Only in this way can healthy substances be released.

Zinc is anti-inflammatory, promotes skin repair and hinders the growth of P.acnes (a skin bacteria that is closely linked to the development of blemishes.
Green vegetables (particularly kale and broccoli) are full of antioxidants and are a good source of zinc.

Owner Natascha Bijl has a lot of experience with acne. Below you can read an excerpt from her blog on Instagram about this.

“I also suffered from the well-known pimples as a teenager. I didn’t really find them bothersome until they became more fiery and larger when I was 19. It was also quite painful to touch my skin. But why? For years I was looking for the cause. Tried the best treatments (also through the doctor and dermatologist) and products. “People” kept insisting that acne equaled too oily skin, so it dried out. Gel cleansing, special anti-acne creams, scrub, benzyl peroxide and especially a lot of products with acids in them. But it just got worse and worse. I ended up covering my skin with foundation out of shame.
At a certain point I was done! Until then, I had been fighting acne from the outside without success. But what about the relationship between acne and diet?
I decided to completely change my diet, no more cups of milk for me every day, no sugar in coffee or tea, and only periodically (you have to treat yourself every now and then) cake or sweets. I also adjusted my skin care products from drying and aggressive to mild and friendly products. And the result is impressive. Today my skin is calm! Doesn’t need foundation anymore.”

Reimbursment from insurance
